Future Fail Modern Warfare 2: Part Deux

By Swag - Posted on 11 December 2009

Thankfully I missed the Q-bert post whore rush, otherwise this story would have been lost in oblivion.

So as some of you may remember, I pre-ordered MW2 at Future shop (can't seem to find the link to my post for some reason) for 49.99 but was charged the full price because of a server time stamp error.

Since then I called 3 times, and was assured that, first, I would get the discount when the item shipped, and when that didn't happen I called two more times and was told that I would get a nice 30$ discount. Since then I waited for it to show up on my credit card but didn't see any change.

So Tuesday I call again and I was now told that since it was a "limited quantity" sale I was not eligible for the discount. I told them that there was still several hundred copies when I ordered it but they basically told me "too bad" as the website isn't accurate blah blah blah.

I tried one last time today but still god screwed...

At least I only payed 59$ instead of the usual 69$.

I now hate Future Shop with a burning passion and every time I play MW2 I will only see Future Shop employees in my way. Rage.

Well I called these retards once more, and basically the moron on the phone said that I had actually gotten a 30$ credit already (something that was promised a couple times before). I asked her again if it was already credited to my credit card and she said that it should be (the guy before didn't tell me this). So I said great and checked my statement but still didn't see any 30$ credit.

However, since this probably happened last time I called (friday) it will take a couple days so I will check my statement later this week. I have a feeling that I will still be screwed.

In a related note I told her that I was charged 59.99$ for the game but she said that it shows that I got it for 69.99$. So I was thinking that if I still don't get 30$ off that I can argue the fact that the invoice was wrong.

You ordered when the website said $39.99, but got charged $59.99?

Swag's picture

It was originally for 49.99, and I assumed that they gave me 30$ off out of compassion, or something. Otherwise you are correct.

Coxxorz's picture

$49, sorry. But is that what your invoice says?

But like I said, I thought that it would be changed when the item shipped and when it wasn't I called right away and was assured that I would get the credit. So that's why i kept waiting and calling, because they said that I would get the sale price. Why they didn't just tell me right away that the game wasn't eligible for the discount I don't know. I would have canceled the order right away in that case.

There are actually three different screwups with that Future Shop sale, and that's just the Billing ones.

- There are people like you who ordered early during the posted time of the sale and now they aren't honouring the sale price.
- There are people who ordered later and got the sale price, but have been charged too much taxes.
- Then there are the really lucky people who ordered the game at the sale price and go charged the full price. Sale price appears on the invoice.

It looks like you could approach it 2 ways. Either argue it was a server error and you should have qualified for the sale price (then you're at the mercy of their Web Support monkeys), or go with their Price Protection guarantee:

Lowest Price Guarantee

Q: I purchased my product within the last 30 days* and I’ve noticed that it’s now on sale for a limited time during an online sales event. Do I qualify for a price protection and how do I go about getting that price protection?

Online: If you have purchased your product within the last 30 days* of the online sales event, you can contact us at 1-800-663-2275 or by email at service@futureshop.com during the time of the sale to receive a refund for the difference under our price protection guarantee.

In-store: If you have purchased your product within the last 30 days* of the online sales event, you can bring your sales receipt into any Future Shop during the time of the sale to receive a refund for the difference under our price protection guarantee.

Please note that requests for price protection made after the sale is over do not qualify under our price protection guarantee.

Since you called right away (during the sale), you should have no problem arguing this angle. I think they confused your case with one of the others by thinking you qualified for $30 off, then later realized that specific issue didn't apply to you.

The original customer service person was right. You just need to stand firm and don't let those minimum wage cock blockers give you any bullshit. Call them up again and ask why you never got your refund under your VALID Price Protection claim.

But they keep telling me that since the sale was a "limited quantity offer" that their price guarantee doesn't apply.

And the thing is that I am not trying to get a price match, I just want the sale price itself (which was 20$ off and not 30$ like they keep saying, but of course I'll take the 30$).

Even though on that one thread it says they were sold out by 4am, and I ordered my copy at 12:20am.

That's why I found the bit that specifically says they will price protect for an item "now on sale for a limited time during an online sales event." I just wish I could remember where I found that, so you could tell them to look up their own policy.

Your second best bet is to go the "server error" route, and just keep trying til you get results. Have you tried emailing, instead of waiting for hours on hold?

Swag's picture

If they said in an official forum post that they ran out at 4am EST, then I should have gotten a copy.

I posted them every hour just to prevent such an occurrence. Blackwalt did suggest I distance them by 6 hours instead of 1 hour, but that was after I had set them to be posted; besides I think he's just jealous...
