First RROD?

By Akuf - Posted on 10 April 2009

Uh Oh!
Well it is quite possible that when I posted WARNING! Latest NHL09 Update. it could have been the beginning of an RROD.

Well here is what happened:
I was playing dead space and the console froze.
On Reboot I got the dreaded RROD.
However, at a LAN party in the past it happened to me and Coxxorz told me to disconnect and reconnect the Harddrive and problem solved
I did so again this time, and the RROD went away. Though I have a feeling that I am on my way to my first RROD.

A pretty quick turnaround.
I got the coffin back today.

I actually waited until the weekend (2 days) after receiving to coffin to ship it out.

So about a week. That's pretty good.

Akuf's picture

Well I dropped of the coffin on Saturday at the Purolator Depot on Merivale.

I get an email this morning stating that they have received the console already...I was WTF? is that possible?

So I go to the site and I notice that the status is now 'repaired' But one funny thing I noticed is that the serial numbers differ. Is it safe to assume that this new serial number is the refurbished console?

Bizarre.

Coxxorz's picture

We already knew that they send you somebody else's refurb, but that is a ridiculously quick turnaround.

Akuf's picture

It's on a truck in Ottawa 'En Route' for delivery!

Akuf's picture

Well I got the coffin all packed.
The instructions say: "Use pressure sensitive tape supplied"
But there is no tape to be found??

Did you guys go through this

Blackwalt's picture

I just used my own packing tape.

Here, you can read about it...

have to provide a copy of the sales receipt with the box?

Coxxorz's picture

But there should be a label with a code you need to stick to the coffin.

I am considering getting a second xbox.
However, I want one with the Jasper chipset. I looked up the Lot (836 or higher) numbers that can contain a Jasper chipset (contains Seperate GPU and CPU both at 65nm).

But in looking this up I discovered there is yet another revision in the chipset coming out latr 2009 called Valhalla which boasts both the CPU and GPU in the same 45nm chip. This means less power, cooler etc.

Though the only consoles I found that 'gaurantee' you to have a Jasper chipset are the Resident Evil Red Elites because everyone I looked at has a Manufacturing date of January 2009. But no lot number displayed on the box.

According to what I have seen on forums etc Lot# 843 or greater pretty much gaurantees the jasper chipset. The lot number means YWW (Year and week) so 843 means built in 2008 in the 43 week (means October 2008).

Just a quick note, when I learned all this I went and looked to see what my lot number is which was 711 which translates to the Zemphyr chipset which is the Xenon (launch xbox's) with HDMI. Bastards!

Also, the rumour mill has a FableII/Halo 3 package coming out in the fall as well (holiday bundle most likely). This could be the beginning of the Valhalla chipset.

I think I may wait for that...

Another method for determining a Jasper model is by the voltage info on the serial number plate. Older Xbox 360's are 12v, 14.2A, but Jasper is 12V, 12.1A.

There may be an issue with the power bricks being different too. So if being able to swap them between machines (LAN partying, etc.) is important to you, you might want to check in to that.

I just buy extras for $100 on eBay and run them until they die.

Fortunately, neither of mine have died in a while.

Akuf's picture

Though...usage means nothing

Seeing as I don't push mine to the limits like most of you guys do.

Even environment means nothing as well. Because my 360 was completely open and in my basement which is cool and dry.

Coxxorz's picture

Although I'm hoping my Halo Edition lasts by virtue of not being used hardly ever.

I have joined the Ranks of the RROD.....

Though here is a little tidbit for you.
When I bought the 360 (Launch Elite).
The sales guy said with all the problems that the 360s are having it would be worth getting the extended warranty.
I asked him two questions:
1) Straight Exchange?
2) Do I get to keep the Hard Drive
He answered yes to both.

So today, I decide to head over the Futureshop and get my straight exchange I am thinking wow this the only time the extended warranty was worth it well let me tell you it wasn't.
Conversation:
Me: Hey, how are you, well I got the Dreaded RROD and I got the extended waranty and I want to get a straight exchange.
Girl: said no it doesn't work that way. We send it to Microsoft and the turn around is a few days.
Me: uh...no... I specifically asked whether it was a straight exchange and I get to keep the HD and buddy said yes (apparently he got fired a little while ago, things that make you go hmmmm).
Her: it was not a straight exchange.
Me: Well, you know what you are giving me the $110 back for the warranty. Because I only bought because of the straight exchange.
Her: Well I am not sure if I can do that.
Me: Oh you better be sure.
Her: I will get the manager.

And now, I have the classic Aku scowl.

The manager came took one look at me shook his head (I am thinking oh this is gonna be bad and Aku scowl got worse). He said something to her she came back and refunded the money.

I was like thank you.

And now I await the coffin.......sigh.....

Akuf's picture

As how it is official...
I would like to know from my fellow RROD'd HoC members what to expect.

I have already ordered the coffin (said it would arrive in about 4 days). How long should I expect to get the 360 back?

Do they actually repair it? or send you another 360?

Coxxorz's picture

Although it will be somebody else's, refurbished.

Because of MS's RROD replacement policy, the only thing the extended warranty would be good for is non-RROD repairs (optical drive, etc.).

Actually I seem to remember someone else getting lied to about straight exchange at Future Shop. Karloff, I think?

Anyway, refresh this page for your consolation prize.

They send you a refurbished one.

Was it 3 lights on the ring, or all 4? There is an important difference.

To be working fine???

Is this normal RROD behavior?

Dark Nightowl's picture

It happened on my first 360. It would have a RROD but a few days later it would boot fine only to get the RROD again. The second time it happened a week later. I let it sit for a few days then it would be good to go again. I placed the warranty call after the third time it got the RROD.

My replacement 360 (received under warranty) got the RROD about two weeks ago. A few days later it was working again. I made the mistake of "testing" it only to have it get the RROD again. Now my copy of Halo Wars was stuck in the console. It kept booting up with with the dreaded RROD. I unplugged it and left at for a week. Tried it again and it booted up fine. My disc is now out and I plan on making the warranty call even though it's currently "working." I'm sure it will get the RROD again but I'm not going to risk getting a game caught in it again.

Uh oh...

Or steady?

That I will be next....

Dead Space is an awesome game though. The audio design is brilliant, especially when you are in a vacuum.

This game also won "best audio" of the year.
