I make beer at home all the time. But I use Muntons or The Brew House Kits (I have made from scratch but it was faaar too much effort). I have heard BAD things about this, but I haven't tried, so I will keep an open mind (and let someone else be the guinea pig here).
But have been watching an ongoing discussion on the subject. This has been getting good enough reviews that I'm comfortable recommending it to the beer aficionados on the site.
One of the benefits is that the fermentation makes its own alcohol, saving you even more money. I would test it myself ($32 is not a lot of money), but I don't drink beer.
There, I said it.
Any of the brewing places around Ottawa (one I can think of immediately is Wine Kitz) have something called "The Big Beer" that's just like this kit. If you got one of those and tried it, at least you would know what it's like before going whole hog and ending up with 8 cases of stuff you don't want to drink...
