Finally, a real use for my Surface Pro

By Stormblade - Posted on 17 August 2015

I upgraded my Surface Pro to Windows 10 the other day and on the whole, I am pleased with the change. The operating system is a significant improvement over Windows 8.1. I have had my Surface for a couple of years now and I have not used it for much, other than Skype and RDP.

I was on the XBox site and read about being able to stream games from the XBox one console onto Windows 10 machines. I was skeptical, but I figured I would give it a try with the Surface. The results were actually awesome.

The one thing the Surface has is a beautiful display. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag looked beautiful (the picture doesn't do it justice). The connection to the XBone was smooth and the gameplay was as good as on the console itself. This is a very nice Windows 10 feature.

There are limitations:

1. The Windows 10 machine MUST be on the same physical network as the XBone. This means you can't take your Windows 10 device to a friends house and play from your console. THAT would be a nice feature!
2. You can't have someone playing on the console and someone on the Windows 10 device at the same time. Too bad. It would be nice to be able to use this feature to play multiplayer on the same network.
3. As far as I can tell, while you can use your XBone controller with the Windows 10 device, it has to be physically connected with a USB cable. I couldn't figure out how to connect it wirelessly.

Still, it's a pretty cool feature and it does now allow me to play anywhere in the house, eliminating the need for downtime during ... um ... natural events.

That actually makes perfect sense.

Also, whatever happened to Windows 9?

But there's potential for some serious awesomeness here. And unlike typical MS releases, they didn't attempt to have it do everything at once and none of it well. Perhaps Apple is rubbing off on them a little.

As for Windows 9, I think that's what the XBone has ...

I dunno, all I take away from that feature is proof that the NSA can watch exactly what you're doing on the Xbox.

If they're really interested in what we do on the XBox, the world has bigger problems.

And those problems are moving onto alternative communication methods as the mainstream ones become infiltrated.

But then we all know Microsoft sold out years ago.
